Mercedes Romero, 19, was looking for a job last year. She thought about applying at Pizza Hut or Subway. Her mom Ginger was considering a new job herself — but she wanted her own business.

So Ginger began exploring options and discovered Cafe2U, a mobile espresso franchise that expanded into the United States in 2012 after wild success in Australia and Great Britain. When Ginger mentioned Cafe2U to Mercedes, the 19-year-old perked up. It sounded fun, more like a career move than a dime-a-dozen summer job.

Cafe2U coffee trucks make about three dozen stops each workday, providing morning and afternoon espresso drinks to workplaces that don’t have easy access to a quality coffee shop. Cafe2U brings the coffee shop menu directly to them.

“I talked to (Mercedes) about doing something that was more than just a job, that would help her build skills,” says Ginger, who started her Cafe2U franchise in Savannah, Ga., in August. “You’re not building skills if you’re just making a sandwich every day for five years.”

A lesson in business

It’s been educational for both of them. Mercedes joined Ginger for training in Bend, Ore., the headquarters of Cafe2U USA.

“She went through every bit of the training with me, she went through the process of obtaining financing, opening the business account, getting the LLC certificate — she’s gone through every bit of it with me,” says Ginger. Together, the pair have developed relationships with dozens of businesses in Savannah, delivering smiles and caffeine.

Why Cafe2U is a good family business

Cafe2U is a good business for families for several reasons: First, the hours are very reasonable and allow for a family life. The first stop of the day is typically around 7 a.m., and the last stop is usually in the early afternoon, so evenings are free — a rare luxury for a small business when it’s just starting out.

Second, whether it’s a mother-daughter team like Ginger and Mercedes or a husband-wife team like Tom and Lisa Nitschmann in Chico, Calif., it’s helpful to have two people in the van. Two people working together to take orders, make coffee, and meet new customers can get the business up to speed quickly, and once the first Monday-through-Friday route is maxed out, expansion is easier since each family member has had time to polish skills and is ready to run a van on their own.

Eventually, Ginger plans to buy a second Cafe2U van, which Mercedes will run.
